Serial Experiments Lain is a Japanese television series created by Yasuyuki Ueda, written by Chiaki J Konaka & directed by Ryūtarō Nakamura. Animated by Triangle Staff & featuring character designs by Yoshitoshi ABe, the series was broadcasted for 13 episodes on TV Tokyo & affiliates from July to September 1998. The series follows Lain Iwakura, a adolescent girl in Japan & her relation to the Wired, a global communication network similar to the internet.Lain features surreal imagery & philosophical topics such as reality, identity, & communication. The series incorporates creative influences from computer history, cyberpunk, & conspiracy theories. Critics & fans have praised Lain for its originality, visuals, atmosphere, themes, & its dark depiction of a world with paranoia, social alienation, & reliance on technology considered insightful of 21st century. It received the Excellence Prize in 1998.
